Who we are

SANKƆFA Gallery is a Ghana-based cultural art foundation and exhibition space devoted to contemporary African expression. Rooted in the Akan principle of Sankofa - to “go back and fetch it” - our work is guided by the belief that what we inherit is not behind us; it is essential material for the future. We return to memory not for nostalgia, but for clarity: to retrieve meaning, protect cultural intelligence, and honour the depth of African creativity in the present tense.

We exist as a platform for artists, audiences, and communities to encounter contemporary work with context and care. Our exhibitions are curated to reflect African realities in their full complexity - identity and belonging, spirituality and ritual, movement and migration, beauty and imperfection, labour and leisure, joy and survival, tradition and reinvention. We treat everyday narratives as worthy of preservation and rigorous attention, and we believe that African art is one of the most powerful archives a society can leave behind.

SANKƆFA’s approach is both scholarly and human. We champion artists whose practices expand cultural conversation, and we create an environment where viewers can slow down, reflect, and engage beyond the surface. Through artist collaborations, research-driven curating, and public-facing programming talks, walkthroughs, educational moments, and cultural gatherings - we build cultural literacy and foster dialogue across generations.

As a foundation, our commitment is long-term: to preserve artistic memory, to support emerging and established voices, and to strengthen Ghana’s position within the wider ecosystem of African art. We are interested in legacy - how stories are carried, how meaning is documented, and how culture is protected without being frozen. SANKƆFA exists to retrieve what is essential, honour it with dignity, and carry it forward, so the present becomes heritage.
